Dog-friendly parks are growing in Britain. One playground-equipment supplier reports that enquiries for dog agility park equipment have “tripled” in the last year, as more public spaces add designated off-leash areas for dogs.
For example, London’s boroughs now boast several free agility trails: Stepney Green Park (Tower Hamlets) has a fenced dog area with tunnel, jumps, an A-frame ramp and poles; nearby Mile End Park offers an A-frame, multiple jumps, a dog-walk ramp and platforms; and Higham Hill Recreation Ground (Walthamstow) includes a tunnel, weave posts and jump obstacles. These courses (all public parks) give owners safe spaces to exercise their dogs, and user accounts note they are well-used by local pet owners.
In Leicester, the RAD Assistance Dogs charity opened an outdoor dog agility centre (at Aylestone Leisure Centre) in 2020 – a council-funded, enclosed grass course with hard-surface agility equipment – which serves both its clients and the wider community.
Even smaller towns have joined in: for instance, Bark Park Hayle in Cornwall (Townshend) is a privately run 1.5-acre secure dog park “with permanent fixture dog agility equipment” for off-leash play. Many areas advertise these facilities as popular local amenities (e.g. Barcelona’s Park for Dogs is a “popular spot” for owners, and Melbourne’s upgraded parks are “becoming more popular”).
Private dog-fields and clubs also abound. For example, in Scotland Aberdeenshire the Let ‘Em Aff Dog Field (Ellon) is a paid membership park featuring tunnels, slides, jumps, sniffing/mound features and “a whole agility park”. In Cheshire the Unleashed Wrenbury Adventure Park offers an “Adventure Area” with agility gear such as tunnels, seesaw and balance beam. In South Shields (Tyne & Wear) the Wonderful World of Dogs is a secure private dog park open year-round; its new equipment includes a seesaw, tunnel, poles and jumps.
