Dear Cherubs,

Imagine attending your own funeral, only to discover that you are, rather inconveniently, still alive. For one 15-year-old girl in Guatemala, this wasn’t a particularly dark joke or the plot of a horror film. It was reportedly a very real Saturday afternoon.

The teenager, identified in media reports as Yuleidy Ixcotoyac, startled her family and mourners when she regained consciousness inside her coffin during her own wake, approximately eight hours after her family had believed she had died.

And just when you thought funerals couldn’t get any more emotionally complicated…

The wake that became a reunion

According to Guatemala’s newspaper Prensa Libre, the incident took place on 10 October in El Jocote, a rural community in the municipality of Sacapulas, Quiché.

Reports indicate that Yuleidy had experienced severe chest pain before losing consciousness while her father, Abraham Ixcotoyac, was driving her towards medical assistance.

Her father reportedly stopped the vehicle and checked for signs of life. Unable to detect breathing or a pulse, he believed his daughter had died.

However, no doctor had examined her, and no medical professional had officially certified her death.

The family subsequently returned home, obtained a coffin and began arranging a wake. By the time relatives and neighbours had gathered, the family believed they were preparing to say their final goodbye.

Then came the unexpected plot twist.

Yuleidy’s mother, Lesvia Ríos, reportedly noticed movement while grieving beside the coffin. When the family looked more closely, the teenager began moving and eventually sat upright.

Instead of a final farewell, the gathering suddenly became an extremely unexpected reunion.

Relatives helped her out of the coffin and gave her water. Footage of the incident subsequently circulated online, attracting international attention.

A family investigation begins

The extraordinary circumstances have also raised serious questions about what happened before the wake.

According to Prensa Libre, Guatemala’s Public Ministry opened an investigation on 11 October to establish how the family came to believe the teenager had died without medical confirmation.

The Procuraduría General de la Nación (PGN), Guatemala’s child-protection authority, also became involved to assess the girl’s welfare and circumstances.

There is an important distinction here: authorities have not established that the father committed a crime, nor have they announced a finding of negligence. An investigation is not a conviction, despite how quickly social media sometimes manages to skip the entire legal process.

Medical assessments were also arranged. According to Infobae’s reporting on 15 October, the teenager was transferred to the Regional Hospital of Huehuetenango for specialist evaluation after an initial private clinic was considered insufficiently equipped for the examinations she needed.

At the time of those reports, doctors had yet to establish a definitive explanation for the episode.

The mystery behind the moment

So, what actually happened?

That remains the biggest unanswered question. Yuleidy reportedly experienced severe chest pain before losing consciousness, but there is no publicly established medical diagnosis explaining why her family could not detect signs of life or how she subsequently regained consciousness.

It would be tempting to label the incident a resurrection, a miracle or some extraordinary medical phenomenon. But none of those descriptions has been scientifically established.

There are medical conditions that can make a person appear unresponsive, and assessing death requires appropriate medical procedures rather than relying on a quick check for a pulse or visible breathing. In this case, the absence of a medical examination before the wake is precisely why the circumstances deserve proper investigation.

And perhaps that is the most important lesson in this extraordinary story.

A person who collapses or appears lifeless needs urgent professional medical attention. Even when the situation looks hopeless, a family should seek emergency assistance rather than assume death has occurred.

For Yuleidy’s family, what began as an occasion of unimaginable grief reportedly turned into a moment of relief. For the authorities, however, the story is far from over.

The internet may have found its latest unbelievable headline, but behind the viral footage is a 15-year-old girl whose health and welfare matter far more than the spectacle.

Dear Cherubs, sometimes reality produces plot twists that even the most imaginative screenwriter would reject as a little too far-fetched. This one, however, deserves less speculation and more answers.
