A prominent building in Brussels, housing the Brussels Stock Exchange, recently underwent an extensive three-year, $150 million restoration, marking a significant moment for the city. However, within just a day of reopening to the public, an unfortunate incident involving an intoxicated Irish tourist took place, marring the restoration efforts.

The tourist, purportedly under the influence, was captured on camera attempting to mount the lion statue situated outside the Brussels Stock Exchange. This particular statue showcases a lion accompanied by a figure holding a torch. Regrettably, the tourist’s ill-advised actions resulted in damage to the statue, with a section, believed to be the torch, breaking off during his descent.
Law enforcement promptly intervened, apprehending the individual at a nearby fast food establishment. The tourist expressed his lack of awareness regarding the extent of damage caused, as reported by local media. The estimated cost of restoring the damaged statue is approximately $19,000. The Brussels Stock Exchange authorities have outlined plans to hold the tourist financially responsible for the restoration, as per local newspaper Nieuwsblad.

Nel Vandevennet, the project manager overseeing the restoration efforts, expressed disappointment over the incident. The building and its accompanying statues hold heritage-listed status, underscoring their cultural and historical significance. Vandevennet highlighted the urgency of repair; however, he also acknowledged that the restoration process might extend over several weeks or even months.

“The entire building, including the two lion statues, had just been painstakingly restored to their former glory, as they were in a deteriorated state. We had hoped for greater respect for these sculptures. It’s disheartening that this incident occurred,” Vandevennet lamented.
The reopening of the building was intended to herald a new era, transforming it into a public space for exhibitions, performances, and various other events. This incident, though regrettable, serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible and respectful behavior around historical and cultural landmarks. It emphasizes the need for visitors to exercise caution and care to preserve these valuable assets for future generations.
